Accommodation

Overnight: 16 nights on safari we stay at designated campsites, in or bordering national parks and towns. Formal campsites have hot and cold showers, laundry facilities & shops. In Windhoek we stay in pre-erected dome tents beds with shared ablutions. 2 nights “camping wild” without fences in the Okavango. On these nights the crew will erect a bucket shower (with hot water off the fire) and a pit latrine (with seat!). 2 nights in Swakopmund in a lodge with en suite twin bedrooms. Meals: 20 breakfasts, 17 lunches and 12 dinners will be provided by the crew, prepared at the vehicle and eaten around the camp fire or in a boma. For certain meals the group will sample the local fare at restaurants (own expense). Transport: we use safari trucks with 12 seats for this tour. Potholes, corrugated gravel roads and livestock on the roads can make travel slow. There are some long drives, so sit back and enjoy the scenery! For the transfers into the Okavango Delta we use open 4WD vehicles with local guides. Limited Participation: An essential part of your safari is participation. From putting up your tent to packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure. Your tour leaders will do all the meal preparation but we do ask for your help (on rotation) with the washing up. There are some long travel days which means early morning starts so we all need to get involved to make the day run efficiently.

Restrictions

We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children). If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc) Average age of our clients on this tour is 46 years old.

Hotel Pickup

This tour starts on day 1 of the tour at 14:00 hrs from the Waterfront Lodge in Livingstone. Most flights into LVI and VFA arrive in the morning. We recommend that you fly into Livingstone airport (LVI) in Zambia on the day the tour starts (or Victoria Falls airport VFA in Zimbabwe – but this will require an additional visa). If you would like to book additional nights accommodation pre-tour, please indicate required airport transfers and lodge reservations when you submit your enquiry

Special Interest: Namibia has a rich ancient rock art heritage. Our local guide in the Brandberg Tsiseb conservancy lands, will lead
us on a walk to view the White Lady rock painting. It is usually assumed that the painting shows a ritual dance, and that the “White Lady” is actually a medicine man.

Sustainable Tourism: In the Ugab wilderness region we camp at the White Lady Lodge campsite. A partnership was Signed in 2003 and the community benefit through employment and a percentage of the income of the lodge. There are also other
spin-offs such as the sale of fire wood to the lodge.

This is a fantastic trip due to the variety of experiences that are included. Some very long days, but all very worthwhile. The “optional” activities such as Zambezi river canoeing, quad biking on the Namib sand dunes and Okavango delta flight were also very worthwhile. The rich diversity of wildlife was amazing: we observed more than 100 species of bird, 30 species of mammal and many reptiles and amphibians- only Leopard was too elusive for all the ‘big five’, but 4/5 isn’t bad! Highly recommended trip. Really good leaders: knowledgeable, patient, hard-working and enthusiastic for the wildlife/environment of these fantastic countries..

Only positive things: well organised and thought through, great amount of information and discussions I learned so much about nature and culture. I felt safe the whole time, you choose companies of high quality to work with (village visit, boat cruise, polers in the delta). Amazing People!!!! – Anne Leinweber – Germany

Hi,we’ve returned from our Desert and Delta safari and I want to thank Sunway for this most wonderful experience. Everything was perfect – the itinerary was great, I saw so many things – a lot of them weren’t even expected. The nature, the different camps (each one even more beautiful than the last…), the possibilities we had … What I liked most was the variety of experiences we had throughout the 3 weeks. The different landscapes, the animals, the nature / wilderness, the encounters with people, activities, …. (but to talk about all the amazing and exciting things we saw and experienced would definitely go beyond the scope!) I wasn’t too keen on cities but even they offered rewarding experiences. E.g. At first I didn’t like Swakopmund very much – it was too much German colony (not only the style but also the people) but we made the township tour and had contact to the people living there which was great – so the impression didn’t stay single-sided. We learned a lot about the different cultures, about the history, the nature, how to live in different environments – we saw much more than I could have wished for, we experienced wonderful people and we met not only a detailed and elaborated itinerary – we also met Africa along the way. That leads me to our guides – I really feel the need to praise them! Jeff and Edwin were wonderful – the best guides we could have wished for. They explained everything to us – they answered all our questions (and sometimes even looked up more details), they were always friendly, funny, helpful, caring, patient. We met other groups and other guides and noticed that their way to deal with difficulties often was much less friendly and effective. Our guides ignored other groups when they started trouble like who is allowed to use a certain spot in the camp and anyway had the best result for our group. They cooked the best meals – in the middle of nowhere – like in the most beautiful places in nature – we had delicious meals you could not have better in any restaurant. (so I did not only learn a lot about nature and Africa but also improved my cooking skills…) Jeff and Edwin were the perfect team. For us they were not only most qualified guides, they were friends that showed us a new world. It was not only a holiday – it was (as Jeff always said) an adventure – it was a dream come true, an unforgettable experience. I’m sure we will come back! – Annika & Jürgen Rieber – Germany

We both had a great trip. We got to see a range of wildlife and it was amazing how close we got to some of the animals (but not dangerously close). We also got to see a variety of landscapes ranging from the dry desert to a bit more greenery in Botswana. A few highlights: 1) the watering holes right next to the campgrounds in Etosha National Park – one evening one was particularly active with animals and again, you’re so close to the animals. 2) the nauklauft National Park climbing the dunes for sunrise and seeing Dead vlei 3) the local people we got to spend some time with from the polers in the Okavango Delta and doing a local bushman walk. Sunway Safaris was great. It seems we got lucky with selecting one of the better companies, even our guides said that if they were to look for another guiding job they would be well respected in the industry given that they had worked at Sunway. When I was researching tours, having a company that could cater for Brendan’s dietary requirements (vegetarian and with strictly no cross contamination with cooking utensils etc) some companies came back to me saying that it would just be too hard to cater for him. Even when you told me that this company could cater for this, we were both still really nervous that dishes may get contaminated with meat (so he took lots of museli bars in case) and that they food for him would just be plain and boring. We were both really impressed with how our guides, particularly Farai the main cook, made sure he had great vegetarian food to eat. – Lauren Smith, New Zealand
