RANOMAFANA NATIONAL PARK

Home to 12 species of lemur

Ranomafana National Park

Rare and exotic fauna and flora await in the 41 600-plus hectares of tropical rainforest that make up one of Madagascar’s most popular – and spectacular – national parks. Established to conserve this unique biodiversity (and subsequently declared a World Heritage Site in 2007), the Ranomafana National Park is home to 12 species of lemur, one of which is the critically endangered golden bamboo lemur, discovered here in 1986.

There is comfortable accommodation in nearby Ranomafana village, and within the park, there are camping facilities and a privately owned ecolodge. Visitors should stay at least one night to make the most of the trails available, and to enjoy a night ride to view the park’s rather exotic collection of reptiles and frogs.

Best time to visit Ranomafana National Park

The best time to visit Ranomafana National Park is during the dry season, from April to December. Even though you pick out a dry period, there isn’t a week in Madagascar without any rain. Ranomafana National Park weather is generally humid.

Explore Madagascar

Madagascar has many different climate zones. This makes the landscape very diverse: from the fertile highlands to the dry south, and from rainforest to tropical coastal areas and idyllic beaches with many sailing, diving and snorkeling opportunities. Every year, humpback whales look for the rich underwater world during their migration. This ‘red island’, as Madagascar is also called, houses a dozen beautiful nature parks. It contains many endemic flora and fauna: plants and animals that only occur in Madagascar. A part of it lives nowhere else in the world, like many species of half apes, reptiles (including chameleons), orchids, palms, not to mention some species of the sacred baobab tree. The island is also a paradise for birdwatchers. Rice is grown on a large scale and you can even find tea plantations. In Madagascar you are in all respects between Asia and Africa. ‘A continent in itself’.
