Comfort and service in the wild
African Travels takes the view that your accommodations are just as important as the safari itself. That is why we make sure that the accommodation we book for you is of excellent standard. Virtually all accommodations are built according to the same principle, in a central location, with a partly open restaurant surrounded by a varying number of guest rooms sleeping two or more people. Each room has its own bathroom facilities. What they all share in common is the incomparable, unique safari atmosphere. The rooms are decorated with natural materials and colours, with romantic mosquito nets draped over large beds with soft and comfortable duvets and lovely crisp linens. Imagine watching the sun set over the breathtaking landscape, or chatting by the fire al fresco, under the stars. These memories will last you a lifetime. At night, you will sleep like a baby, and if you don’t, you can listen to the orchestra of the wilderness. Can you hear the elephants, the lions or the hyenas? Dinner and breakfast offer a wide choice of African and western dishes, usually served as a buffet. More and more accommodations feature swimming pools.

Itinerary

Day 2Masai Mara National Reserve

After an early breakfast you will be collected by your guide and you will start your journey to the Masai Mara Game Reserve. This park has the largest amount of wildlife in Africa and is often called the ultimate safari destination in Africa. The park is situated in the northern part of the Serengeti-Mara eco system, and is best known for the annual wildebeest migration. Enjoy your first safari, while slowly traveling towards the lodge, in time for lunch.

At the end of the day there is another game drive. Enjoy the endless plains and animals you may encounter during your game drive!

Day 3Masai Mara National Reserve

During your stay here, you have plenty opportunity to explore this huge park. You can see elephant, giraffe, lions, thousands of impala, topi and other species of antelope. There are also many bird species, more than 450 different species have been discovered in this area. The grass plains of the Mara is the place where the wildebeest migration takes place, normally around June every year. They move here from the Serengeti looking for food and water.

Day 4Lake Naivasha

After breakfast you drive to Lake Naivasha. Enjoy a boat cruise in the afternoon, during which you might see many different bird species, while being surrounded by amazing nature. Lake Naivasha is mainly known for its large hippo population. On about a half hour’s distance is Hell’s Gate National Park, where you can take a walk or cycling tour.

Day 5Amboseli National Park

After breakfast it is time for to check out. You will continue your tour to Amboseli National Park via Nairobi. Lunch will be packed and you will stop on the way to enjoy your lunch. Today is a long traveling day, but this also allows you to see a bit of Kenya and its people and surroundings.

Amboseli is well known for its elephants and its view on the impressive Kilimanjaro. The area always looks dry; this is partly cause by the volcanic ashes from the Kilimanjaro. But even though it seems dry, there is always water to be found due to the melting snow, which is filtered through the volcanic rock. The water runs underground and leads to a beautiful green environment and 2 watering holes in the park.

Day 6Amboseli National Park

Discuss the times of the game drives with your guide. In-between the drives there will be time to enjoy your lunch. You could also opt to enjoy an afternoon siesta and do the game drive a bit later. After all this is your holiday, just let the guide know how you would like to schedule your day!

Day 7Arusha

After breakfast you will be dropped off at the Namanga border post, where you will meet the guide that will accompany you in Tanzania. We make use of local, passionate guides who know their own country really well and who enjoy showing people their country and culture.

*You can also opt to fly from Nairobi to Arusha (costs are app. € 220 depending on availability at time of booking)

Day 8Canoeing in Arusha National Park

Your canoe trip will last about 2,5 hours, during which you can spot various animals, such as zebra, buffalo, giraffe etc. You might even get lucky and spot the Colobus moneky! These are monkeys with a long white tail, they don’t have a thumb, which is how they got their name; Colobus derives from the Greek word “kolobos”, which means “stump”.

If the skies are clear, you will have an amazing view over Mount Meru and the peaks of Kilimanjaro.

Day 9Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, it is time to leave. Next destinations is Tarangire National Park (you will collected around 08h00 AM). enjoy the long game drives at leisure! This National Park is mostly known for its baobab trees and the massive herds of elephant.

Day 10Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast you will travel to Lake Manyara National Park. This park consists of salt lakes and rain forests. Due to the underground rivers, there is always water in this area, which attracts animals, who are ever present. This makes this park unique and very different to Tarangire or the Serengeti.

Day 11 - 13Serengeti National Park

The next few days mainly consist of game drives in the Serengeti. Let your guide know what time you would like to leave on your game drives and which animals you would like to see, so he or she can try to track it down for you!

Day 14Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Today you will return to Karatu. You will drive through the Ngorongoro area, which is home to the Masai. You can visit a Masai village or take a walk through Karatu if you feel like it.

Day 15Ngorongoro Crater

Today you will travel to the bottom of the famous Ngorongoro crater. Ngorongoro is a unique crater, also called Caldera. A Caldera is a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses. This is how the Ngorongoro came to be, about 2 million years ago. The crater has a diameter of 18 kilometres and is about 700 meters high. It is home to more than 25000 animals. The crater is a great place to spot the endangered black rhino and the black maned lions.

Day 16 - 18Zanzibar Island

It’s an early departure today! This time you will leave for Arusha, where you will take a flight to Zanzibar. Time has come to say goodbye to your guide.

Upon arrival in Zanzibar you will be met and taken to your hotel.

Enjoy the next few days on tropical Zanzibar. A visit to Stone Town is a must, it’s like being in the Far East! A spice tour is also very worthwhile and don’t miss out on the Jozani Forest!

Most activities can be booked at the hotel’s reception or via your local guide. Take a boat trip in a dhow, book a massage in the spa or just enjoy your surroundings, no need to get bored here!

Day 19End of Itinerary
