This self drive allows you to visit most highlights of the Southern part of beautiful South Africa. The trip starts and ends in Cape Town. Travel along the magnificent Garden Route to Addo Elephant Park.  The way back to Cape Town leads you via the KleinKaroo and Cape Winelands. A beautiful round trip which will show you many different aspects of this superb country

Travel at your own pace
We will book a rental car suitable to your party and wishes. The advantage of having your own transport is that you decide how far and long you will travel each day, where you stop and for how long. We will provide you with directions and additional tips and tricks.

Itinerary

Day 1, 2, 3Cape Town

Welcome to South Africa! Upon arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation.

The next morning it is a short taxi drive to the car rental company in the centre of Cape Town. Spend the next few days exploring this magnificent city at your own pace!

Visit Table Mountain, Robben Island and Cape Point. But there are also many other less known attractions you might encounter that are absolutely worth visiting! 

Day 4, 5Hermanus

Hermanus is a pretty coastal town, well know for the annual visit of the Southern Right whales, who visit this bay her to give birth to their calves. Hermanus is one of the best places in the world for land-based whale-watching.

Hermanus also has its own wine route, the Hemel & Aarde Valley. There are close to 20 wine farms, where you can taste wines and enjoy good food! Grotto Beach is perfect for long walks and Hermanus has multiple restaurants that serve amazing sea food!

Day 6, 7 Knysna

Knysna is situation along the Garden Route and is famous for its stunning lagoon. There is plenty to do here; rent an e-bike, do a whale watching or eco boat tour on the ocean, walk in the stunning Tsitsikamma Forest or shop until you drop at the Knysna Waterfront. All in all Knysna is a lovely place to spend a few days and enjoy the surroundings!

Day 9St. Francis Bay

St. Francis Bay is a cosy  coastal town, with many small canals in between the house and a harbour called Port St. Francis. The architecture of the village is very unique. The town consists partly of black&white houses which are linked through small canals and surrounded by the ocean. Another part of the town has a bit more Mediterrean look with expansive living areas in earthy colours. In the harbour of St. Francis Bay are many little shops and restaurants. 

Dag 10, 11Sibuya Game Reserve

Upon arrival at Sibuya Game Reserve, you will be transferred by boat across the Kariega River to the exclusive River Camp, offering a relaxed and scenic start to your safari experience. After check-in and a light lunch, there is time to unwind and enjoy the peaceful surroundings and river views.

In the afternoon, you set off on a guided game drive with an experienced ranger, searching for wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and possibly lions or rhinos. At sunset, enjoy a sundowner in the bush, followed by a delicious dinner at the camp and a relaxed evening around the campfire.

The next day you will enjoy an early morning game drive and an afternoon game drive. These two days are full catered: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 12Plettenberg Bay

Arrive at The Old Rectory, a beautifully restored historic hotel set between the Keurbooms River estuary and the Indian Ocean. After check-in, take time to unwind in the elegant gardens or enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool.

In the afternoon, explore Plettenberg Bay at your own pace. Stroll along the nearby beach, take a walk along the estuary, or opt for an optional activity such as boat-based whale watching (seasonal), kayaking on the lagoon, or a visit to the Robberg Nature Reserve for a scenic coastal hike.

As the day draws to a close, enjoy a sunset drink followed by a fine dining experience at the hotel’s restaurant, where seasonal, locally inspired dishes are paired with excellent South African wines.

Day 13, 14Prince Albert - Vrisch Gewagt Boutique Olive Farm

Arrive in the charming Karoo village of Prince Albert, nestled at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains. Continue to Vrisch Gewagt Boutique Olive Farm, a peaceful, family-run olive farm just outside town. After check-in, take time to settle into your stylish cottage and enjoy the wide-open Karoo landscapes.

Spend the afternoon exploring the farm at your own pace. Wander among the olive groves, relax on your private veranda with mountain views, or cool off in the pool. For those wishing to explore further, a short drive takes you into Prince Albert village, known for its art galleries, heritage buildings and excellent local eateries.

As evening falls, enjoy a relaxed dinner in the village or self-cater at the farm, followed by a night under the Karoo’s famously star-filled skies.

The next day you can decide to drive the Swartberg Pass or do an olive tasting at the farm.

Day 15Montagu

Arrive in the historic village of Montagu, set between dramatic red sandstone cliffs and vineyards along Route 62. Check in at Mimosa Lodge, a charming, family-run guesthouse located in a beautifully restored Victorian home, known for its warm hospitality and tranquil garden setting.

Spend the afternoon at leisure. Take a stroll through Montagu’s quaint streets, visit local art galleries, or relax in the lodge’s peaceful garden or by the pool. For those seeking wellness, the Montagu Hot Springs are just a short drive away and offer a perfect opportunity to unwind.

In the evening, enjoy a fine dining experience at Mimosa Lodge’s renowned restaurant, where seasonal ingredients and classic flavours are paired with excellent South African wines. End the day with a restful night in your elegant room, surrounded by the calm of this picturesque Klein Karoo town.

Boschendal Farm Franschhoek

Enjoy 2 days of the Franschhoek wine scene. In the centre of town you can book a bike or the wine tram and go and have a picnic at one of the many wine farms. Boschendal has a market and picknick possibilities itself as well.

Day 17End of Itinerary

Today marks the end of your South Africa adventure. Hopefully you have made enough memories to last you a lifetime! It is time to go home. Travel to the airport, where you hand in your rental vehicle (with a full tank), in time for your flight back home.
