20 days – South Africa self drive | Johannesburg to Cape Town over land

DAY 1 & 2 Southern Kruger

Upon arrival, you will collect your rental car and drive to the magnificent Kruger Park. The next few days offer you have the opportunity to explore the Kruger Park yourself, see if you can spot the big five! On one of the mornings or afternoons you will go on an organised game drive.

DAY 3 Swaziland

Today you will cross the border into Swaziland. The lodge will help you to arrange some local activities. You will see that Swaziland has a completely different vibe to South-Africa and the people are extremely kind and friendly.

Candle factories, craft markets, nature reserves, no need to get bored here.

DAY 4 & 5St Lucia

After breakfast you drive to St. Lucia and spend the next 2 days exploring the town,or have a swim at Cape Vidal! Isimangaliso Wetland park is definitely worth a visit too!

On day 2 you go on a Hippo&Croc cruise on the lagoon.

DAY 6Umhlanga

After breakfast you travel south towards Umhlanga, a nice coastal town close to the airport. Spend the afternoon on the beach, or just relax at the guesthouse!

DAY 7 & 8Port St Johns

Long trip today, which offers you the opportunity to see of South Africa’s coastal beauty! Next stop is the Wild Coast. Spend 2 nights at Umngazi River Bungalows, along one of the most beautiful coastal stretches of the country!

DAY 9 & 10Chintsa

Next stop is Cintsa, a popular place for South African locals. Enjoy the scenery!

DAY 11 & 12Addo Elephant Park

You will continue your journey, now to Addo Elephant Park. Spend the next 2 days trying to spot the big 5 in a very different environment from the Kruger, and get up close and personal with the many elephants in this lovely park.

DAY 13 Storms River

Storms River Mouth is a beautiful location on the coast. Enjoy the amazing scenery, go for a walk, a canoe trip or conquer the highest bungy jump in South Africa from the Bloukrans bridge!

DAY 14Knysna

Knysna has a stunning lagoon. There is plenty to do here; Go for a sailing cruise or whale/dolphin cruise, visit the many shops at the Waterfront, visit the nature reserve, play a round of golf on one of the amazing courses in the area, visit the Knysna Elephant Park or have cocktails after an oyster tasting at the Project Bar on Thesen Island!

DAY 15Oudtshoorn

After breakfast, you will continue your journey towards your next destination; Oudtshoorn. Famous for its ostrich farms, this Klein Karoo town offers good old-fashioned hospitality and plenty of things to do. The famous Cango Caves are also here, definitely worth a visit!

DAY 16Montagu

Follow the scenic Route 62 towards Montagu. One of the prettiest roads in the country, the R62 takes you through some cosy and hospitable little towns. Stop at one of the farm stalls for something to eat, home cooked meals and snacks are plentiful and delicious!

Montagu is a nice town where people are welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed, enjoy country life!

DAY 17 - 19Cape Town

Spend the last few days in Cape Town, also known as the Mother City. Explore the many attractions on the hop-on-hop-off bus, take a drive along Chapmans Peak, visit cape Point, the V&A Waterfront, the penguins at Boulders Beach or take a stroll on one of the many breath-taking beaches! The active amongst you could try to climb Table Mountain, or hike one of the many trails. Soak up the vibes of this amazing city, it never disappoints!

Day 20Departure

Today it’s the end of your holiday, return the rental vehicle at Cape Town Airport and start your journey back home.
