Day 1Windhoek

Today you will arrive in Namibia. Upon arrival you will be met by our representative at the arrivals gate.
Drop off at the 4×4 depot for collection of the vehicle.
The afternoon is at leisure. You will have some time to do some shopping for the next couple of days.

Dag 2, 3Okonjima Nature Reserve

Today your self drive journey starts! Drive towards Okonjima Nature Reserve and camp your first night in the African bush.
Halfway between Windhoek and Etosha lies the well-known Okonjima Nature Reserve. The 22 000 ha Nature Reserve is surrounded by 96 km of fence and was finally completed in 2010. Okonjima is home to AFRICAT, a Carnivore Conservation, which gives the captive carnivores a second chance to be released back into the wild and to take the time it needs, to become a completely independent hunter – in a protected area right in the middle of commercial farmland!

Day 4, 5Etosha South

Explore Etosha with your own rental vehicle and drive from waterhole to waterhole. The animals are most active during early morning and late afternoon hours.
You could book a safari with a guide through the lodge. However, we feel that Etosha is very suitable for self drive.

Day 6Opuwo

The surrounding landscape is characterised by low-lying hills, and vast dry desert plains inhabited by a wealth of desert-adapted wildlife. It serves as the central hub for the Himba culture. The town provides a perfect base for visitors wishing to explore the Kaokoland area and visit the local villages of the itinerant Himba people.

Day 7,8 Epupa Falls

One of just five perennial rivers in Namibia, the Kunene is an invaluable source of water for the local Himba people, and it has been the mainstay of their existence for hundreds of years. For travellers, the river’s most striking feature is the Epupa Falls, which cascade over a distance of more than a kilometre downstream, with a total vertical drop of around 60 metres. White water rafting and kayaking are both popular pursuits on the Kunene.

Day 9, 10Ovamboland

Drive towards Ongula Village. Activities in the surroundings include homestead tours, village walks, excursions to Ondangwa, and experiencing the culture and life of the residents.

Day 11Rundu

Drive towards the greener part of Namibia. The lodges offers boat trips which are excellent for birding.

Day 12, 13Kwando River

The parks in de area offer some great wildlife spotting. Drive yourself or book a game drive via the lodge.

Day 14, 15Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

Cross the border into Zimbabwe. In Victoria Falls there is plenty to do: from rafting to bungee jumping, river cruises and wine drifts. No need to get bored!

Day 16Kasane Forest Reserve

Cross the border into Botswana. A boat tour is a must, watch the elephants swim.
Time to do some shopping for the next couple of days, bring extra fuel and water. There are no facilities in Savuti/Moremi.

Day 17Savuti - Chobe National Park

This route is only suitable for 4×4 experienced drivers. Enjoy the Botswana wilderness and camp inside the natonal park.

Day 18, 19Moremi Game Reserve

Enjoy the next couple of days exploring one of the best wildlife areas in the world.

Day 20Maun

Enjoy your game drive towards Maun.

Day 21Ghanzi

Drive towards Ghanzi. Home of the San people.

Day 22Windhoek

Drive back into Namibia. Again a long drive. We recommend to spend the nights in or near Windhoek to rest some before you start your journey home.

Day 23End of Itinerary

Drive towards the airport/car depot and hand in your vehicle. Time to fly home. We hope you enjoyed your trip.

Family Traveller

Dream safari trip – everything we wished for
We traveled for 3 weeks self drive through Namibia and Botswana with a family of 4, including two teenagers 15 and 17 years old. Intake with Marijnke was to the point, good advice after she asked for our desires. Great proposal which we adjusted a bit here and there. Swift communication, reliable, service oriented. All bookings went well, smooth checking in everywhere. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, camping in both the wild and in more organised environments, small scale campsites, not busy at all (very important) so no feeling of mass tourism whatsoever. Only the Okavango delta trip from Maun appeared a bit like mass tourism with helicopters swirming around and ridiculous pricing USD760 for 4 people simple day tour.
During the trip we realised we would have wanted more resting moments than planned – quite a few nights we stayed only one night. Learning point for us. Also the USD cash appeared unnecessary, as we could pay border fees and park fees in local currency, and also mostly by bank debit/credit card. Also navigation advice for self-drive could have been more extensive, e.g. advice to use the MAPS.ME app instead of Google Maps. The driving on soft sand tracks took way longer than indicated so we spent quite some time travelling, some more than anticipated. All in all fantasic work bij Marijnke and team, big thanks!!!!!

Couple Traveller

Last year we visited Namibia, this year we decided to travel on our own through Botswana and the northern part of SA. However, it was difficult to book campsites on our own in Botswana, communication with the campsites was bad or we got late responses. Therefore, we decided to contact African Travels for help. It was the best thing we did. Marijnke (owner of African Travels) knows a lot about Africa and she knows the most beautiful places. Thanks to her, it was an unforgettable experience!

Communication with African Travels was more than good. Because of the weather, we changed part of the trip. Marijnke was reachable 24/7. She came up with good ideas how to travel and which campsites/accomodations were still available and she also booked the locations for us while we were in desert.

Furthermore, African Travels arranged a very good car for us (Toyota Hillux 4×4) by a trusted partner of them. The owner of the rental company also knew a lot about Africa and told us the
most beautiful stories.

I definitely would recommend to contact African Travels if you want to travel trough Africa so that your dream can come true!
