An overland camping group tour to finish with the highlight of a trek to see the endangered mountain gorilla. With game drives in the Masai Mara, The Serengeti and into the ancient caldera, Ngorongoro Crater. The Genocide Memorial in Rwanda as well as Lake Naivasha for a hippo cruise, and the Giraffe Park in Nairobi.

Good to know

Tents and roll mattresses are provided. The tents have sewn-in floors and mosquito netting for added comfort. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and sleep sheet.

Additional camping gear can easily be purchased at the start of the trip in Nairobi. All campsites have good ablution facilities and usually a bar. Some campsites also offer a restaurant, small shop and internet access. At around half of the campsites, upgrades to a hut or cabin are available at an additional cost.

Important

The minimum age for this trip is 18. Most travellers are between 18 and 39 years old, but anyone with an open mind and adventurous spirit is very welcome to join.

Please note that this is an active overland journey, which involves regularly getting in and out of the truck.

Itinerary

Day 1Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

Your journey begins in Nairobi, where you meet your crew before departing the city and heading into the Great Rift Valley. Along the way, you stop at a scenic viewpoint to take in the dramatic landscapes and get your first glimpse of rural Africa.

Arriving at Lake Naivasha in the afternoon, you head out on a boat cruise across the lake, where you may spot hippos and a wide variety of birdlife. Back at camp, there is time to relax and settle in, surrounded by nature and the sounds of colobus monkeys in the trees.

Day 2Lake Naivasha to Loita Hills

Today you travel towards the remote Loita Hills, located on the edge of the Masai Mara. Here you stay with the Maasai, one of East Africa’s most iconic and traditional communities.

In the afternoon, you explore the area on foot with Maasai warriors, learning about their way of life and traditions. You visit a local village, see natural hot springs and experience traditional dancing. In the evening, gather around the fire to hear stories and gain insight into Maasai culture.

Day 3Loita Hills to Masai Mara

After saying goodbye to your hosts, you continue to the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife reserves. Upon arrival, you head out on your first game drive, searching for the incredible wildlife that calls this area home.

Day 4Masai Mara National Reserve

Spend a full day exploring the Masai Mara on game drives in 4×4 vehicles. This reserve is famous for its abundance of wildlife, including the Big Five.

Depending on the season, you may witness part of the Great Migration, where vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move across the plains, closely followed by predators such as lions and hyenas.

Days 5Masai Mara to Nairobi

After a final morning in the bush, you return to Nairobi. The afternoon is free to relax, catch up on emails or explore the city. In the evening, there is the option to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Days 6Nairobi

Today you visit the Giraffe Centre, where you can get up close to endangered Rothschild giraffes, followed by a visit to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage to learn about the conservation and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants.

The rest of the day is at leisure.

Days 7Nairobi to Arusha (Tanzania)

Leaving Kenya behind, you travel south towards Tanzania, crossing the border at Namanga. Along the way, you pass through open savannah landscapes dotted with acacia trees. After arrival in Arusha, there is time to relax.

Day 8Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater

Today you journey into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater for a game drive. This ancient volcanic caldera is home to an incredible density of wildlife, including lions, elephants, rhinos and buffalo.

In the evening, you camp on the crater rim, where cooler temperatures and sweeping views create a unique atmosphere.

Days 9Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park

You continue through the conservation area towards the vast plains of the Serengeti. Along the way, you pass Maasai villages and see traditional life unfolding.

Entering the Serengeti, you enjoy a game drive en route to your campsite in the heart of the park.

Day 10Serengeti to Bunda

Start the day with an early morning game drive, when wildlife is most active. You then travel west through the Serengeti and the Grumeti area, continuing your journey towards Bunda.

Day 11Bunda to Lake Victoria (Mwanza)

Today you travel to the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Enjoy the relaxed lakeside setting and watch local fishermen at work.

Day 12Lake Victoria

A free day to relax or explore Mwanza. You can visit local markets, experience daily life or simply unwind by the lake.

Day 13Mwanza to Nyakanazi

You travel deeper into rural Tanzania to Nyakanazi, where you stay in a simple local guesthouse. This is a unique opportunity to experience everyday life in a small village and enjoy a traditional meal.

Day 14Nyakanazi to Kigali (Rwanda)

Cross into Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills”, and continue to the capital city, Kigali.

Day 15Kigali

Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, an important and moving site that provides insight into Rwanda’s history. The rest of the day is free.

Day 16Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Travel north towards the Virunga Mountains, home to the endangered mountain gorillas.

Day 17Gorilla Trekking - Bwindi

One of the highlights of the journey: trek through the forest with experienced guides in search of mountain gorillas. Once found, you spend time observing these incredible animals in their natural habitat.

Day 18Volcanoes National Park

Today you can choose from optional activities such as a golden monkey trek or a visit to the Dian Fossey research centre.

Day 19Volcanoes to Lake Bunyonyi (Uganda)

Cross into Uganda and travel to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa’s most scenic lakes, surrounded by rolling green hills.

Day 20Lake Bunyonyi

Enjoy a relaxed day by the lake. Swim, canoe or take in the peaceful surroundings.

Day 21Lake Bunyonyi to Kigali

Return to Kigali, where your journey comes to an end.
