The South African part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park used to be known as the Kalahari Gemsbok Park. The park is renowned for its predator and raptor viewing, and not surprisingly, its gemsbok or oryx; the elegant grey, black and white antelope with their rapier-like horns.
The best time to visit Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is best at the end of the rains, from March till May when animals congregate around the river beds. This makes for easier sightings. However, Kgalagadi gets extremely hot during summer so the cooler winter months (May to September) are the most pleasant.
Honey Badger (Ratel), Pangolin (Scaly Anteater) and Bat-eared Fox are some of the park specials to search for. But it is the predators that are the park’s biggest attraction. Excellent chances of seeing cheetah, leopard, brown and spotted hyena and the definitive black-maned lion exist.
Botswana has one of the highest desities of African cats. The endangered Wild dogs can be spotted in several areas aswell.
