The parks form together one of the biggest wildlife parks in the world, as both cover an area of about 22.000 km2. Tsavo East is most famous for it’s big herd of buffalo and beautiful orange soil.
Just as in Tsavo West, it is in Tsavo East allowed to do night game drives as well. Sometimes it can take a while before you see an animal, but it is definitely worth the wait! The reward will hopefully be a leopard. This park is ideal for a short safari when you stay in Mombasa.
Tsavo East has in contradiction to Tsavo West much more wide, open and dry plains. Due to the Galana River this park is very attractive to wild animals. The famous Big Five is living in this park. Other animals you may come across are giraffes, zebras, antelopes and different species of monkey. Also, many species of bird live in Tsavo East, as over 500 different species are registrated.
Best time to visit Tsavo East & West National parks are January and February, as well as from June to September. It can be quite wet between March and May as this is the heavy rainy season.
Tsavo East has all of the Big 5 (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino) as well as giraffe, hippo, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, gerenuk, bat-eared fox, hartebeest and more. The densities in Tsavo West are less than in the East, but you can still see the same animals.
