This park is home to big herds of lions and buffalos, and crocodiles and hippo’s near and in the river. Besides all the wildlife, one can enjoy amazing views as well, dominated by the impressive Mount Kenya. Also, all the roads are very well accessible. This park is located about 350 km from the capital Nairobi. The biggest advantage of this park is that it’s not as busy as other parks in Kenya.
Besides buffalos and lions, also two other members of the famous Big Five do live in Meru National Park: elephant and leopard. You also have a chance to find cheetha’s, giraffes and different species of antelopes, like the Kude and Dik-Dik antelope. In Meru you can also spot over 350 species of bird!
Meru is a destination that can be visited at any time of the year, but the game viewing probably best between June and September. During the wet months, it is more difficult to find the animals, as the bush is thicker and there is more surface water.
A much smaller park with a great variety of animals such as Grevy’s Zebra, Elephants, Eland, Bush Pig, Waterbuck, Cheetah, Leopard, Reticulated Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Bohor Reedbuck, buffalo, hartebeest, and over 400 species of birds have been recorded here.
