The attractions of this Reserve are very diverse. From the varying vegetation zones, ranging from dense thickets to open wooded grasslands, to walking safaris and boat safaris along the Rufiji river with its many lakes that are abound with hippopotamus and one of the greatest concentrations of crocodile. One of the main attractions is the possible sighting of hunting dogs (lycaon pictus), which have become rare in the northern circuit.
The dry months (June to October) is the best time to visit Selous Game Reserve. Animals are easier to spot because the bush is thinner and animals hang around the places where there is water. Keep in mind that many lodges are closed during the low season (March, April).
Selous is a great place to view buffalo, eland, African elephant, greater kudu, wild dog. zebra, wildebeest and lions are also present and there are some of the last black rhino in Tanzania present. Wild dogs are rare.
