The reserve covers more than 4871 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, and the varied terrain includes savannah, winding waterways, and thick forest. This diversity supports an incredibly wide spectrum of wildlife, ranging from large herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, to the rare sitatunga and lechwe antelope, and lion, cheetah and packs of wild dog in the open grasslands. The birdlife is prolific and includes most of the 550 bird species recorded on the Botswana national bird list. Moremi Game Reserve can be visited any time, but the best time for wildlife is in the dry months from July to October. January to March are normally not so great, as it can get very wet, which sometimes makes roads impossible to drive on.
Moremi is home to some large mammals: elephant, cheetah, white and black rhino, African wild dog and lion. Over 500 bird species have been recorded and there are many antelope as well as zebra and giraffe.
Botswana has one of the highest desities of African cats. The endangered Wild dogs can be spotted in several areas aswell.
