This massive 6.5 million ha lake is three times the size of Wales and is shared by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It is both Africa’s biggest lake and the source of its biggest river, the Nile. Its waters are rich in fish life with shimmering shoals of colourful cichlids and large Nile Perch which is sought after by fishermen.

Best time to travel to Lake Victoria

If you want to see the chimpanzee at Rubondo Island, Rubondo Island National Park is best visited in the dry months of July to February. The jungle is less humid and there are less mosquito’s. The temperatures are not as extreme.

Rubondo Island National Park is one of two Tanzanian National Parks located on an island in Lake Victoria. With bustling wildlife and unique species, it is one of the most ecologically diverse places on earth. The wetland species include the Sitatunga antelope, the vervet monkey, the spotted-necked otter, and the hippopotamus, which all reside in or around the waters.
