NAMIB-NAUKLUFT NATIONAL PARK

Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon

Namib-Naukluft Park

The Namib is the world’s oldest desert, and although it stretches along the entire length of Namibia’s coastline, the Namib commonly refers to the vast sea of sand from Luderitz to Swakopmund. For a big sandy desert the scenery is remarkably varied, with the giant red dunes of Sossusvlei being the most famous part.

Because of how old it is the Namib is home to numerous species that don’t occur elsewhere and although no humans live in the desert an amazing array of flora and fauna manages to survive here. Famous species include the Welwitschia – a living fossil plant, endemic chameleons, fur seals along the coast, brown hyenas, jackals and remarkably one of Africa’s largest antelope the Gemsbok. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means “vast place” and vast it certainly is.

Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon

Sossusvlei is a dusty clay pan overlooked by hundreds of towering sand dunes up to 300 metres high. The dunes vary from pale apricot to vivid reds and bright orange. The most famous one is undoubtedly Dune 45, it is best to climb it in the early hours and watch the sunrise from the top.

Best time to visit the Sossusvlei

The best time to visit Namib Naukluft National Park is between May and September. However, for camping it might be chilly at night. July and August are very crowded. October till January are very hot.

Wildlife

More than 50 species of mammals have been recorded in the areas adjacent to Naukluft such as kudus, oryx, giraffes, springboks, Klipspringer antelopes, duikers, steenboks, leopards, baboons or, black-backed jackals, bat-eared foxes, African wild cats, genets, caracals, aardwolves and aardvarks and the few black rhinos reintroduced in 2007 to commemorate the centenary of the park. There are more than 340 different species of birds as well.
