The creation of the Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation lead to the establishment of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994 on 3,700 hectares of donated bushveld land that had previously been utilised for cattle farming. The Reserve is now home to a wide variety of animals and plants that are endemic to south-eastern Botswana, some of which are extremely rare or endangered.
Since its creation, Mokolodi Nature Reserve and its programmes have grown significantly. The Reserve currently employs approximately 90 people, of which approximately 75 are from neighbouring communities. Our Education Centre accommodates more than 9,000 school children per year in its environmental education programmes, and the Reserve on a whole welcomes more than 60,000 visitors on an annual basis.
In order to sustain the conservation efforts of the Nature Reserve and the educational pursuits of the Mokolodi Educational Centre, Mokolodi offers fee-based tourism activities (including game drives, rhino tracking and conferencing, as well as great accommodation). The income generated from these activities assist the Reserve in subsidising its conservation and education programmes, while providing unforgettable experiences to Reserve visitors.
Mokolodi Nature Reserve can be visited all year but the best safari months are from May until November. However, October and November can be very hot.
Wildlife resident in the reserve include kudu, warthog, duiker, giraffe, steenbok, zebra, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, ostrich, impala, springbok, waterbuck, baboons, vervet monkeys, mountain reedbuck, eland, bushbuck and leopard.
Botswana has one of the highest desities of African cats. The endangered Wild dogs can be spotted in several areas aswell.
