The birding is excellent especially near the lakes and swamps. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. Other attraction of the park includes opportunities to meet the Maasai people and also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Animals have plenty to drink due to the melting waters from the mountain. It is therefore one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world with 400 species of birds including water birds, pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hammerkops and 47 types of raptor. Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African wildlife because the vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months. Amboseli National Park is home to many species, including the African elephant, cape buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest among other African animals. There is also a host of Kenyan birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting.
The roads in Amboseli have a loose surface of volcanic soil that is dusty in the dry season and impassable in the wet season. Amboseli is a nice addition to your Kenya safari cirquit. It is completely unique compare to the other Kenyas parks due to the stunning Kilimanjaro in the back ground.
The best time to visit Amboseli is during the dry months, from June to September and during January/February. During the other months it rains, which provides much more drinking water,the animals are more difficult to find during these months.
