Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga National Park covers a surface of 34 km2. The park is sharing its borders with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Congo.
Mgahinga is located 15 km south of Kisoro and 55 km west of Kabale. The three parks cover a total surface of 434 km2. Mgahinga is one of the two places in Uganda where the mountain gorillas can be spotted. This park has only one gorilla family that can be visited. This family sometimes cross the border into Rwanda.

Three out of eight volcanoes, which form the Virunga Mountain Range, are located in Mgahinga National Park: Mount Mahubura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo. These three mountains are located on the Ugandan/Rwandan border. From the base center of the park all of these three volcanoes can be climbed within a day!

Best time to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga National Park can be visited all year long, but the best times are from June to August and December to February. At these times, the forest trails are drier and easier to walk on.

Wildlife

Mgahinga is a gorilla trekking destination but it is also home to other 76 species of mammals, although they are difficult to glimpse in the wild forest vegetation. They include giant forest hogs, bush pigs, forest buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, golden cats, side striped jackals, black fronted duikers and South African porcupines.
