Like the Makgadikgadi Pans to their sounth the Nxai Pans were once ancient slat lakes. Today they are oceans of grass dotted with “islands” of trees and small pans that fill in the rainy season. One such “island” is the home to the famous Baines Baobabs first drawn by the explorer in the 1860s and little changed to this day.
Nxai Pan is best to be visited from December till April if you want to spot the zebra and wildebeest migration. All year round a safari is well worth it. Just don’t expect as many animals as Chobe or Moremi. The scenery is the main draw here, with wonderful sand dunes, the famous Baines Baobabs.
Large herds of zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok and eland can be found here, as well as less common animals, such as bat-eared fox, hartebeest, brown hyena and even cheetah and wild dog.
Botswana has one of the highest desities of African cats. The endangered Wild dogs can be spotted in several areas aswell.
