INHAMBANE

Quaint seaside town

Inhambane

This quaint seaside town, the capital of Imhambane Province, is known for its wide, almost land-locked bay and its beautiful but crumbling Portuguese architecture. Points of interest include the vibrant local market and the nearly two-century old Cathedral of our Lady of Concepti. Located within easy driving distance of Inhambane are the popular beach destinations of Barra, Tofu and Guinjata Bay, which offer excellent snorkelling, diving and fishing.

The small fishing village of Tofo is located on the eastern shores of the Inhambane Peninsula between the Indian Ocean and a small inland reed – lake system. This small town has a unique “island style” atmosphere, with a great mixture of a local market, local arts and positive Latin vibes. The crystal clear waters and white sand beaches attract holiday makers, backpackers, scuba divers and relaxation seekers from around the globe. A few kilometres north of Tofo, at the northern tip of the Inhambane Peninsula, is the town of Barra. Barra is a 7km stretch of beautiful white sand beach perfectly positioned between the Indian Ocean on one side, and a fascinating mangrove estuary on the other. Both Tofo and Barra offer beautiful beaches and numerous accommodation options, but definitely have their own unique character and vibe.

Best time to visit Inhambane

The quietest months are after Easter until early July. If you don’t like the crowds, that will be the best time to dive. Dive sites are not crowded, seas are calm, water temperatures have not dropped, and the big stuff is still around.

Sealife

Enjoy some of the most spectacular dives in the world with sightings of whale sharks, sharks and rays of various species including giant mantas up to 7 m in wingspan, dolphins, various species of turtles, and the majestic humpback whales that visit these waters between the months of June to November during their annual migration.
