This pristine wilderness is characterised by endless golden savannah and grassy floodplains stretching over 3600 square kilometres. The park is inhabited by a diverse variety of birdlife and wildlife including: lion, wild dog, zebra, cheetah, buffalo, roan antelope and flocks of crowned and wattled cranes, to name a few. Visitors can enjoy an exhilarating flight over the awe-inspiring floodplains of the Zambezi, stroll past blooming irises and colourful lilies on a guided walking safari, soak up the spectacular scenery on a game drive, or visit a local village and learn about Liuwa’s fascinating history and traditions.
May and June are good months to visit Liuwa Plain, just before the animals retreat. Another good time is after the first rain in November. December is also good, but as the season progresses, tracks deteriorate.
These best travel seasons are very different to the rest of the Zambian parks.
This park does not have the big 5, and lion is only spotted occasionally. But the sheer volume of grazers make this park very unique. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can be seen, as well as buffalo, tsessebe and lechwe. The wildebeest migration is the second-largest in Africa.
Zambia is excellent for wildlife photography. No crowds and stunning scenery.
