Because of the Shire River flowing through this national park, it is possible to do boat safaris besides the well known walking and open 4×4 game drive safaris. In the river there are many hippo’s and crocodiles to be seen. In the rest of the park you may come across elephants, hyena’s, lions, leopards and antelopes. Also, they have reintroduced the black rhino! The park is also know for its great variation of birds, like the African Fish Eagle for example.
Best time to travel to Liwonde National park us during the drier months, from June-November. In the wet season from December – March there is occasional flooding and roads are hard and sometimes impossible to drive on. Game is also harder to find during the rainy season as they spread out over the park. From April onwards it is dry again and tha park is easier accessible.
Large mammals that can be found here include buffalo, antelope (including eland, the endangered sable antelope, and waterbuck), baboons, black rhinoceros, bushbuck, elephants, hippopotamus, impala, kudu, monkeys, and warthogs. The park is home to dozens of other grazing mammal species, as well as crocodiles.
