Malawi’s biggest game reserve, Nkhotakota is provides a habitat for an abundance of game, including lion, elephant, buffalo, antelope and more.

This rugged wilderness of forests, rivers and grasslands lends itself to a variety of sports and activities, including hiking, fishing, bird-watching and rock climbing. The reserve does encompass a number of camps, but an alternative option is to stay at one of the lodges on the shores of Lake Malawi and take a day trip into the reserve.

Best time to visit Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve

Best time to travel to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve is during the drier months, from June-November. In the wet season from December – March there is occasional flooding and roads are hard and sometimes impossible to drive on. Game is also harder to find during the rainy season as they spread out over the park. From April onwards it is dry again and tha park is easier accessible.

Wildlife

More than 500 elephants and almost 2,000 game animals were moved from Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve to Nkhotakota in 2016 and 2017 as part of the historic 500 Elephant translocation that took place in Malawi. Other animals that are present are zebra, buffalo, baboons. Lion and leopard are rarely seen.
