KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

One of the world’s largest and most famous game reserves

Kruger National Park

At more than 2 million hectares the Kruger National Park is one of the world’s largest game reserves and a truly remarkable destination. Because of its exceptional size you can experience amazing diversity – from the scenery and ecosystems to the correspondingly amazing array of animals, trees and birds. A trip to the Kruger National Park is an unforgettable and potentially life changing experience.

Tip: If you spend more than 5 nights in Kruger Park and/or one of the other national parks in South Africa, it is worth it to purchase a Wild Card. This card will reduce your daily conservation fees. For more information, please visit: www.sanparks.org

What is the difference between Kruger Park and Greater Kruger Park?

The Greater Kruger National Park (GKNP) refers to the more than twenty private reserves west of the Kruger National Park (KNP) that add 180,000 hectares to the reserve. In total, the entire area covers 20,000,000 hectares of unfenced, wild reserve with free movement of animals across this spectacular country.

Best time to travel to Kruger National Park

The best time to go and visit Kruger National park is from May to September (dry season). High Season is from December to January and July to August (Especially during school holidays). Low Season is from April to mid-June and September to November (except for the October school holiday).

Best weather usually from April to May and September to October (mild weather and little rain).
Based on the weather we recommend you to visit the park in either April/May or September until October. The temperatures are doable and there is not much rain.

Wildlife

The biggest national park in South Africa, this park houses many animals, such as lion, cheetah, leopard, caracal, and serval. Really big mammals are elephant, black and white rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, zebra, and Southern African giraffe. Also, African painted dog, black backed jackals, and spotted hyenas can be found. There are also around 500 different bird species to be found in Kruger.

Kruger Private Game Reserves

All along the world renowned Kruger National Park’s western boundary are private game reserves which combine with the Kruger to create one of the world’s largest game reserves and a truly remarkable destination. These reserves offer excellent game viewing opportunities together with the advantages of smaller, hosted accommodation and game drives. A trip to the Kruger is an unforgettable and potentially life changing experience.

Balule

Balule Private Game Reserve consists of 40,000 hectares of prime game reserve. The park is not only home for the much sought-after Big Five, but also for an incredible variety of other wildlife: antelopes, big cats, wild dogs, giraffes, zebras to name just a few – and birds. With the eternal Olifants River flowing through it, Balule is an important area for wildlife and bird watching.

Sabi Sands

Sabi Sands includes the Mala Mala Reserve, Djuma Game Reserve, Lion Sands, Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, Londolozi Private Game Reserve, Singita Game Reserve and Ulusaba Private Game Reserve and covers 65,000 hectares. The Sabi River and the Sand River run through the area and offer different habitats for the huge number of animals. The area is best known for its large cat sightings, in particular the elusive leopard.

Kapama

Kapama Private Game Reserve consists of 13 000 hectares of wilderness. Both the Kapama River and the Klaserie River flow through the reserve and create an area of river forests in the midst of a vast savannah. These serve as natural water sources for wild animals, of which there is a wide range!

Timbavati

Timbavati has more than 50,000 hectares of primary wild-filled savannah and includes the Motswari Game Reserve, Ngala Game Reserve, Tanda Tula Game Reserve and Umlani Game Reserve. The area is best known for its white lions that, if you’re lucky, can spot among the abundance of wildlife. Thornybush Thornybush Private Nature Reserve consists of 14,000 hectares of unspoilt bush, full of animals and birds.

Klaserie

Klaserie is one of the largest private game reserves in South Africa, Klaserie, covers 60,000 hectares of land along the Klaserie river. The owners are very concerned about conservation and the park houses three great projects: the Ground Hornbill Project, Rhino Protection and The Elephant Project.

Safari packages

Visit Kruger park on a self drive, fly-in or small group safari!
On a self drive you can either stay in the National Park at a self catering chalet or campsite or we book you in a lodge with the game drives included. For a more exclusive experience we recommend the private game reserves in Greater Kruger.

Where do you have the best safari experience?

Kruger compare to Greater Kruger

Limited number of people is allowed on the private game reserves, making it a much less busy safari experience and giving the visitor the feeling of having a real Africa experience, unspoiled by too many cars and people.

Because the borders between the Kruger National Park and the Greater Kruger National Park are not fenced, there is free movement of all types of game, so you can observe a huge variety of animals.

The private game reserves are next to the Kruger Park: day trips to the park are easy, giving you the best of both worlds: walking safaris, safaris in safari vehicles and night trips are offered on private game reserves with expert guides.

Accommodations on the private game reserves are more exclusive, with smaller lodges, great service and more luxurious facilities.
